Marine Life around the Gili Islands

What can you see around the Gili Islands is one of the most questions people ask. How is the marine life around the Gili islands looks like?

The Gili Islands are part of the coral triangle. The coral triangle has the most diverse marine life of the world and habitat more fish than other places.

But what is so special about the Gili Islands:

1) Hawksbill Turtle:
The Hawksbill turtle is over the world critical endangered but here, around the Gili Islands, we are lucky to have them around.
Not particularly large compared with other sea turtles, Hawksbills grow up to about 114 centimeters in shell length and 68 kilograms in weight. While young, their carapace, or upper shell, is heart-shaped, and as they mature it elongates. Their strikingly colored carapace is serrated and has overlapping scutes, or thick bony plates. Their tapered heads end in a sharp point resembling a bird’s beak, hence their name
The Hawksbill Turtles eats sponses and you can find them at the divesites Sharkpoint, Halik, Turtle Heaven, Hans Reef, and Subset Reef. These dive sites are typically coral reefs.
Dive resort Oceans 5 has a turtle nursery at the dive center. Most of the time Oceans 5 is taking care of little Hawksbill turtles that walked into the wrong direction.

2) Green Sea Turle:
The Green sea turtle looks more beautiful comparing to the Hawksbill turtle. The name green doesn’t come from the green shell but from the color of the shin of the body.
The Green sea turtles become a bit bigger than the Hawksbill. Weighing up to 317.5 kilograms Green sea turtles are among the largest sea turtles in the world. Their proportionally small head, which is no retractable, extends from a heart-shaped carapace that measures up to 1.5 meters.
The Green seas turtles are not eating sponses but more sea grass and algaes.

3) Bumphead Parrot Fish:

The largest of all parrotfish, the Bumphead parrotfish is an olive or blue-green to slate-grey fish, with a yellowish to pink head. Its most distinctive feature, and the reason for its common name, is the prominent bulbous forehead which develops in adults. Parrotfish get their name from their peculiar teeth, which are fused into a parrot-like beak. They also have teeth at the back of the throat which grind food. You can spot them around the Gili Islands in the weeks around full moon. There can be school of 50 species of them. They are impressive and not afraid at all for divers.

4) Whitetip Reef Sharks:
The Gili Islands has a few dive sites where you can find the Whitetip reef shark, like Sharkpoint, Sunset Reef, Deep Turbo and Halik.
Since this is a slow species compared to others, they prefer to hunt at night when most sea animals are sleeping. They prefer eels, crustaceans, octopus, lobsters, and crabs. We see them always sleeping at the bottom at a sandy patch or hiding under a table coral.

5) Mandarin Fish:

Dive Resort Oceans 5 has his own house reef. And there you can find at least 30 little Mandarin fish. The Mandarin fish is one of the most colored fish in the world. It looks beautiful and especially during dusk the fish become more active and leaves the corals.

Most of the dives around the Gili Islands are drift dives. Oceans 5 keeps the groups small, maximum 4 divers with the same certification level to 1 divemaster.
